Packt Publishing has made available for free the electronic (pdf) version of Learning VirtualDub: The complete guide to capturing, processing and encoding digital video, by Georgios Diamantopoulos, John Beuchler, and Sohail Salehi.

and select the Adobe pdf option.
VirtualDub is described on the site as "the leading free Open Source video capture and processing tool." I've not personally tried yet. Please respond if you've used it and can tell us about its usefulness.
