Our church completely stole this idea from Mars Hill (askanything.marshillchurch.org) but we went with it.

Any help or advice on design and (primarily) functionality?

thanks

Hi, Jim,

I just went to your the "askanything" website. I gave a response to the wine question. I have no idea whether the answer went through. I wrote the anti-spam numbers. I hit the submit button, and it loaded for a long time. I then got a white page. In the bottom bar, the name of which I don't know, it said "done." I also noticed that it said that it had to be "approved" or something of that nature before it could be viewed.

That is a bit awkward and will take you ages if many people sign up. And the person who is commenting like I did doesn't know if the comment went through or not.

It looks like a neat idea. I am not certain that I understand the sermon aspect of it, but I understand the question asking part of it. Actually, I have never seen anything exactly like that before. I had to investigate. :)
Couldn't help myself!

Hi Jim,

First, I love the idea.

Now, here are my comments.

1) "You pick the sermon." Catchy, but inaccurate. In the form at right, visitors are suggesting sermons. They don't get to pick sermons.

2) In the left column, it says, "Then we will compile the TOP 8 and they will be given starting Sunday, January 6th." What defines "the TOP 8"? You probably mean, "the top 8 vote getters," but that's assumed rather than made explicit.

3) I was able to submit a suggestion without a problem. (Carol spoke of numbers, which I assume was a CAPTCHA feature, but I never saw this.) The response was:

Thank you for your participation. You may submit as many responses and votes as you would like. Submissions end December 9th, 11:59pm. The top 8 will be preached on starting January 6th.

Hope Works meets every Sunday morning at 10:30am and Wednesday nights at 7:15pm @ the Botanic Gardens Indoor Theater

I have a 20 inch flat screen monitor. I barely can see the location of your church at the bottom of the screen, and I certainly couldn't see it after I voted because the poll results stretch the browser window vertical by a couple of inches.

So ... allow me to suggest:

1) Include time zone in the response. (Your site may be seen by people from around the world.)

2) Include location right there in the response.

thank you all again for your help. I added a couple of pages to explain what we are doing. Carol the comment did make it up. David, in a sense they do pick the sermon. They do not have to submit any responses they can just vote and the top 8 get preached. I know some people might get confused.

Hi, Jim,

Re: the website.

I find this:

http://www.youpickthesermon.com/why.html

very difficult to read. It looks neat, but there is just not enough difference between the background and the text. If a person has much difficulty with his/her vision, he/she will not be able to read it.

Thanks for the comment on my response. :)

any ideas on how I can make this more functional? I would love somehow to be able to manually order posts. Any other ideas?

Hi, Jim,

I don't exactly understand your question. What is it exactly that you want to do? What do you want to make more functional?

What posts would you like to be able to manually order?

I am puzzled. That is not unusual. :-)

It took a long time for your website to load on my DSL. Did anyone else have that difficulty. I mean it is long in comparison to the time it takes to load other websites.
