I've been asked to post some video to our site. I know it can easily be hosted on Google videos and embedded to my site. My question is on converting files. They shot some video and burned it to a DVD. The disc contains a folder with .ifo .dup and .vob formats. Looks like I need to convert the vob to a different format for Google (.avi .mov .wmv .mpg).

I did a search on download.com and found software to do this but would appreciate recommendations, hints, etc. Any freeware that can do this?

Thanks

Depends on your converting hardware.

I use Handbrake (http://handbrake.m0k.org/) on my MAC and don't go anywhere near my PC for video conversion - too many attempts at background disk and memory read/writes can make for jumpy video.

I read that they are working on a windows port of the app as well though.

Defaults on this are to MPEG4 or AVI for video but they also do just vanilla audio ripping and they have default settings for ripping to play back on an ipod or similar device.

I use Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0. It is under $100 and you can do whatever you want to the video.

YouTube and other video sharing sites are great, but at the end of the day, the video is on their server. A very easy way I have found to get a "YouTube" like video to play on your site, from your site is to use Jeroen Wijering's flash video player (free download http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=Flash_Video_Player). It is controlled with flashvars so you don't have to have a copy of flash to manipulate it. It can play one file or use an XML file to display a playlist of videos.

The videos on my site were taken from either a DVD, an mpeg, WMV, MOV, etc. and put into the adobe program, a quick slide was added to the front of it, then exported as a FLV (flash video). I am sure there are free video converters out there. I have not personally used them.

You might want to ask them if they can re export the video to mpeg form. That actually won't take that much more time then converting it and it won't have the chance for the video's quality to degrade.
