David,

I can't seem to get the forum to safe my user name and password anymore, did you change something with the login procedures? Has anyone else had this problem?

Hi, Kyle,

I have that problem from time to time. Right now, I am being let in without retyping every time. But I went through a number of months, 3-4, when I couldn't get in without manually logging in.

I didn't know why then, and I don't know why now. I realise that this is not a particularly helpful answer, but at least you are not alone. :D

Carol

I wonder where the skellchecher went.

Which browser are you using? I'm going to guess Firefox.

The "Remember Me" (keep me logged in) feature relies on cookies. At pat answer would be that you've turned off cookies, but you would know that.

It's possible that Firefox preferences are set (or got set) to delete all your private information upon exiting the program. That would include cookies, history, forms autofill, etc. For example, when you type in the first part of the forum URL in the browser address bar, does Firefox autocomplete the rest of the URL? If not, that's an indication your private information is being cleared.

Anyway, I tested this just now. I can tell you that Firefox will not remember you are logged in (to the forum) if privacy information is cleared, either manually or by default. So that's one possible source of the problem.

Sincerely,

David Gillaspey

I know that firefox forgets but the forum used to remember, vbulletin ( and most other cms packages) stores a file on your machine in another folder instead of the usual cookies, and when you revisit the page it auto fills in for you, I have had firefox deleting cookies for a year+ now and it's just recently that I have had the problem, if you didn't do anything than firefox 2.0 must delete those files along with the cookies. thanks david

Hi Kyle,

Sometime in the past, after upgrading the forum software (previous to my upgrade last month), I did have, for a period, exactly the problem you are experiencing. It eventually resolved itself.

Now in fact, I did make a change a month ago. I added a mod[ification] to the forum that made the default to be "Remember Me" (that is, the option was checked by default). Previously, the user had to remember to check this for him- or herself. However, I don't believe that's related to your current problem, and regardless, at least on my computer, with Firefox (not 2.0), the Remember Me feature is working.

It's very possible that upgrading to Firefox 2.0 wiped out some file that saved your login, however, as soon as you logged in again (and, assuming the "Remember Me" checkbox was checked), the Remember Me function should begin to work again. That's why I suspect that Firefox 2.0 came with the Clear All Private Information (that's my label, not the real title of it) feature enabled by default, which, if I'm right, wipes out your login information each time you quit the browser.

I'll have to upgrade to 2.0 in a week or so, after I finish my current online Art History class. (It's very time intensive.) There could be problems with Firefox 2.0 that I need to experience for myself.

David,

It seems that my password is being remembered. The forum used to auto load my user name and password into the login fields, that's gone but when I type in my user name the password auto populates.

Hi, Kyle,

I hate to ask this, but what do you mean by "when I type in my user name the password auto populates?" That is one of the strangest phrases I have read in a long time. :D Does your password populate like rabbits do?

Carol,

It's programming speak. You enter data into a 'field' in this case teh password box. The act of entering that data is known as 'populating the field'.
