Check out the map located right on the home page of this church's website: www.christredeemer.com. This map certainly had to have been made in Photoshop (or more likely Illustrator), as Jack advocates. It includes arrows showing where drivers should turn, which is what I like about it.

That's an excellent example!
The arrows are wonderful, and you wouldn't have gotten those from taking from MapQuest (or other mapping site). The image clearly shows what side of the street the church is on. Finally, there is no pesky copyright message in the corner.

My own map is pretty simple, which I think is best. I used a MapQuest map as a template, then created my own over the top in a graphics program. http://www.columbinehills.org/map.html. I heartily recommend the simpler approach, but that's my bias. I also recommend adding a larger map for those without perfect eyesight. Most of the maps I've seen are pretty small.

In case anyone wonders, the ideas above are now quite out of date. Mapping has come a long way, and I wouldn't recommend making maps anymore...I'd recommend embedding a live, draggable map into your pages instead.
