View Full Version : Layers or Divs??

I've just recently started experimenting with div tags instead of slapping a layer down and inserting the pic/text/etc. I'm not quite convinced I like designing solely using div tags. Are there any advantages to using them as opposed to layers? Which do you all prefer? It seems to me that you have better control with layers that you do with divs.
Thanks in advance.

Hi michelle
As far as I know layers were a netscape invention and there may be issues with cross browser support. I would say it is bad practice to use them but if you are used to it and you are happy with how it works in ie6, firefox etc then go for it. You should be able to do everything with a div that you could do with a layer using the appropriate css. What are you trying to do?

Thanks mrbelfry...
I've always designed using layers (I'm, by-far, no expert), but someone wanted me to maintain a site for them that was already established and it was solely div/css. I found it frustrating at first, but as I'm learning my way around using this instead of layers, I started questioning which one was better.
