Hear Ye, Hear Ye,
Our church redesign is up and working. :D I am so tired I could fall on my face, but I had a wonderful time doing it.
I have a question to which I have been unable to find an answer. It is:
Why do links to Crosswalk.com scripture work on IE but not on Netscape or Firefox?
If you want to see what I mean, go to:
www.wabashfirstumc.org/scripture_sunday.html (http://www.wabashfirstumc.org/scripture_sunday.html)
The link is the line that says, "To see the scripture in the version...." It will work from the above link. But it will not work on the other two search engines.
I can't figure it out.
Thanks.
Carol

Hi Carol,
Nice job on the redesign!
You still have different colors on each page, but because the colors are more subtle now (light tints), it actually works for you.

While it looks visually good, it really breaks down in non-CSS enabled browsers (you can tell this using FireFox and the Web Developer toolbar, and then disabling all CSS styles. This exercise is highly recommended for accessible design.).
I suspect that the scripture link can't be clicked in Firefox because it is buried under layers of divs by the z-index style attribute:
<div style="position: absolute; top: 6px; left: 51px; width: 52px; height: 94px; z-index: 9;" id="element96">
However, I do not know how to fix that in Homestead.

Hi, Jack,
Thanks for taking a look. I am glad you like the look even though you don't like the whatever it is.
I am going to write to Homestead support. There should be a way to fix that. I just thought maybe one of you whiz people would know. :D

I really like the visual layout of the site.
I am sorry that I sound like such a wet-blanket/downer with my standards-based, accessible approach to web design.
I bet Homestead will have an answer for you.

Thank you, Jack,
I appreciate that so much. I gave a lot of thought to it. And then I thought of the artist, Piet Mondrian. Much of his work I do not like; much I do like. But there is one picture that sticks in my mind. And I wondered if I could work up a design using that kind of idea.
You will like this. I had somebody ask me where I got the software to make a design like that. :D In my head, one piece at a time, one page at a time, and I truly enjoyed it.
I appreciate your approach to web-design. I have learned a lot about what not to do as well as what to do. I doubt that I will ever be able to build a website the way you do, but that is okay. I at least put in alternate text this time when it was necessary. I also discovered there are times not to use alternate text. For example, if I have a picture under which is written "George Berg Quartet," the screen reader will read that. I do not need to write an alternate text which says the same thing. I am now beginning to notice that people do that frequently. And if an image is a link, that can be included in the alternate text in order to help the person use the site. I finally understood what it is for. And I downloaded a screen reader so that I could check it out.
The only problem is I don't understand how to use it on the website. I can use it fine on other things though. It is really weird to listen to what I have written.
Jack, if I didn't want some kinds of comments about the redesign, I wouldn't have told you all about it. If you remember, I never really did with the other one. I included it in my signature, and from time to time I would ask a question. But that was it. However, somebody on here quite some time ago said that the site looked like a site for old people. :) I don't think this one does...I hope.

Hey Carol
My site once got described by David as Mondrian as well so we have something in common. Your site has everything I look for in that I can see your address and telephone number straight away and you've got service times on your homepage. These are massive in my opinion. We've had people come to our church simply because of that fact!
I also like the little drag your cursor from one asterix to another on your youth page. Your site has a character and personality and that is important, especially on a church website, in my opinion.
Now for something you probably don't want to hear. I had a quick look at your html and homestead seems to me to be quite insane. I know it is the tool you are comfortable with and normally I'd say if you are used to it then keep using it. However the code it is producing is beyond stupid and I suspect you are much better than that.

Hi Carol - I was looking at your site and noticed that some pages don't have titles. Just a little thing you can do after you have a rest from all the work you've done so far!! Looking good.

Carol,
Looking good. I like the color change for different sections of the website. I'm not sure what your problem with the scriptures was I got it to work in Firefox fine.

Thank you, Kyle, :)
The part that we couldn't get to work on Firefox or Netscape either was on the Scripture reading page....the one from Deuteronomy. At the bottom of the text is a link which says, "To read the scripture in the version of choice, click here" or something like that. It takes you to Crosswalk.com where all those Bible tools are. That is the one which won't work for me and for some others as well. Is that the one you are talking about? Or were you talking about the scripture link on the index page? That one works fine with everything.
I appreciate everyone's taking a look. I have learned a lot here. Bless your hearts!!

Carol,
I followed the scripture link all the way to crosswalk.com and it worked fine for me. My guess would be that the people having trouble have an older version of firefox, if they upgrade that might fix the problem.

Hey, Kyle,
You are a super-duper genius. I downloaded Firefox again, and it worked for me too. Maybe Netscape has an update as well.
Can you tell me which of all of those add-ons have value? I don't know what most of them are used for.
Thanks again!!

carol,
there are a lot of add-ons made for particular groups and it is sometimes hard to figure out what some of them are for. Use this rule, If you can't understand it then you probably don't need it.
Jack talked about a couple of the most useful extensions for webmasters in this thread (http://www.greatchurchwebsites.org/forums/showthread.php?t=34&highlight=firefox+add-ons). On top of that here is some advice, set aside some time and go cruising through the mozilla add-on site, just pick a section, such as developers or security and read through all the descriptions and find ones that you like, try them out and see which ones work for you. also sites like download.com (http://www.download.com) have lists of the best add-ons and the mozilla site displays the most popular on its main page. Hope this helps.

Firefox 1.5.0.4 is old? That's what i had trouble with before, but now I am not. I wonder if Homestead resolved the problem for Carol.

I don't know if Homestead fixed it or not. I did not contact them about it. And I wasn't the person who noticed that the link didn't work on Firefox and Netscape. A young man on another forum noticed the link didn't work.
Somebody suggested that I might have an older edition of Firefox installed, but I didn't think so. However, I download what is not there. And the link works now in both Firefox and Netscape. I didn't do a thing to Netscape. Andy said that it didn't work in Netscape either, and it didn't for me.
I would like to know what made that happen, but I am just pleased that it works now.

Carol,
there is always another reason. Crosswalk.com has done something to it's server to fix the problem.

How true. Sometimes I forget there is an us and them to these situations. I bet that is the answer because I thought I had the updated Firefox too.
