What a refreshing site this is. I just became the webmaster for our church several months ago. I work with computers all the time but not "web" stuff. I really had to learn a lot to get our site live. It has been an enjoyable experience and I look forward to getting a lot of good advice and maybe someday being able to contribute.

Hi, Dave,

Welcome, welcome, welcome. You do not need to know a thing in order to post. And besides that you probably know more than you think and have more to offer than you think you do.

There are some of us on here who are just toddlers when it comes to working with computers. I am one of them. I taught myself 3 1/2 years ago. Then I did a website too. It isn't great, but it works and slowly is getting better. I doubt that I will ever know how to make it great. I am aiming for decent. So jump right in with the rest of us. Be at home and contribute to the pot of information which is available here.

Welcome aboard!

Carol

dave,

Welcome, I hope you find everything useful. The site looks good. Is it a hard coded site? if so congrats on the documentation. What type of Computer experience do you have. Again welcome and feel free to join any of the conversations we have had here.

Thank you for the kind words and encourgement! I tried to take a "Web" class a couple years ago (Front Page) but was just as lost after the class as I was going in, so I lost interest. Then we started going to our present church and talking with the Pastor, he found out my background and asked if I would consider doing a web site. I was reluctant but I agreed. I found out that it isn't as hard as I thought! (at least the mechanics of it.)

I don't know what you mean by "hard coded" site. What I did was to search the internet for church sites and I found a template I liked so I just started changing it to make it "mine". I tried Front Page and DreamWeaver but for my simple pages I just use a simple text editor called PSPad. I have been "tweaking" the code and adding comments as I can.

As far as my computer experience, I got my first one in 1980 and have been hooked ever since. At present I am a technician for the phone company and maintain a server farm of terminal servers, software and hardware. I did some network consulting on my own but I had to give that up when we took my mom in, she's 87 (I'm 57) and needs constant care, because I just didn't have the time to visit client sites. But I have my computer set up so I can tend to her and work on the computer too.

Welcome aboard! Always glad to have another among us!

It does look like you already have a good start with your website, but I always find that a webmaster's job is never done! :D

Feel free to ask any questions you have here. We've got a number of different guys who are our resident experts in different fields (CSS, validation, ColdFusion, etc.) who will be more than happy to answer your questions.

maybe someday being able to contribute. Dave

You are already contributing!! (I like his posts... cares for his mum, helps his church).

I'm in the same boat, just getting started here. It's a good place to fellowship and enjoy the many perspectives from a wide array of background abilities.

I was given such a warm welcome here, and wish to extend the same to you. So, welcome... (and here's the collective right hand of fellowship.) (or rather the left hand with thumb up).

Hi, Dave,

My apologies for not greeting you. Welcome aboard. You are right about differing abilities. This is one of the best schools on the website.

Fortunately, you have lots of computer experience which will serve you very well!! I know because I didn't have any. I learned how to use the computer with PCs for Dummies and lots of trial and error.

The same with the website. I had no idea under the sun what I was doing so I jumped in with my big feet and went at it. Some of the things I have done are terrible. Ask some of the people here. They will tell you I speak the truth. :D Some of my pages are better than others, of course, and one of them I can't seem to get right for the life of me. It may be that I need to combine it with other pages.

Anyway, I am glad you are here. It is terrific to see what other people are doing and the ideas they have. I have even been known to download part of a person's index page and fiddle with it just because it is fun...and I learn from doing it.
