All,
What forum software have you used and would you recommend it?
David,
I am not sure if this should be put here or under the "what software do you use for your site" conversation starter, but I will post it here and you can move me if you need to.

I had used PHPBB (http://www.phpbb.com/) for a corporate client a while back and had no problems but I have heard of some really bad security gaps that have made companies servers crash . Has anyone had that type of experience before?

This location is fine. Thanks for asking, though.
As for phpBB, I did start out using it for this forum, before a benefactor offered to underwrite the cost of vBulletin. There were numerous security problems with phpBB, and updates to address them — but that has been true of vBulletin, too.
There were some nice "hacks" (add-on features or forum modifications) available for phpBB.
Personally I find vBulletin to be way overpowered for the needs of this forum; phpBB would work fine for most people.
Sincerely,

David,
What type of security openings has vBulletin had in the past?
I agree with you that for the average user a forum system like PHPBB is plenty the only problem I see is the security problems. So here is the next question; What is the most secure forum software out there?

All, What forum software have you used and would you recommend it?
I use a version of DNN. I've put up a "Forum Module" on this page. I've not had any trouble with it. I don't like PHP for security reasons, so only use Microsoft proprietary software to create portal software.
Here's the link to the Forum (http://mba.atlanticwebfitters.ca/Stuff/Forum/tabid/58/Default.aspx)... I've left it open for public editing.

vBulletin all the way.
]What type of security openings has vBulletin had in the past?
They have similar problems as other boards, with XSS and such. However, they seem to have fewer of those kinds of problems and they fix them much more quickly.
What is the most secure forum software out there?
I'd say vBulletin, but a good case could be made for iPb.
