I was using Mambo Open Source, but have switched (along with thousands of others) to Joomla (http://www.joomla.org)
I find that it's easy to set up, I can change the template, and the look, but not the content is instantly altered. It is also fairly easy to train church staff to use.
I am waiting for Fantastico (http://netenberg.com/fantastico_scripts.php) to be updated on my server to include Joomla, which would make installing much easier and faster. The current version does include it.

Your post was in January 2006. Are you still using Joomla? Version 1.5.13 is one of my Fantastico options. I'm just getting started. Do you know of a good source for templates for Churches that would work in Joomla 1.5?

Hi, Bob,
I have heard about Fantastico, but I haven't investigated it much. What is it and how is it used.
Have you wondered where everyone has gone from David's Forum? I am signed up to receive all of the threads. It just seems that everyone disappeared...or they became so bright they have nothing to ask and nothing to contribute. I have to include myself. I have not participated either. I am lazy. I don't have a content management system.
This is apropos to nothing, but on June 28 I gave the sermon at one of our services. :)
I hope everyone is well!!

Fantastico is part of several (?) hosting administrative systems, including cPanel (which my hosting service uses). It allows for the easy installation of programs/applications to your website with just a few mouse clicks. I installed Joomla 1.5 in about 2 minutes using Fantastico.
Using a Content Management System would be a big jump for me. I'm now helping a small United Methodist congregation with a website, and am using Joomla as a learning tool. Based on my experience there, I'll decide if I want to use it to tackle my local church's site, which currently consists of over 1,100 pages -- all hand coded (started in 1996).
I administer about 20 sites, and really have little time for forums. Sad.

Have you wondered where everyone has gone from David's Forum?Hi Carol,
The forum actually is closed (see my website's home page). This is one area of the forum that I never got around to turning off people's ability to post. But ... thanks for posting (both you and Bob).
