Hi,

Just thought I should introduce myself. My name is Kristen and I am currently the webmaster for Faith United Methodist Church in Austin, TX. (I do it because no one else at the church had the skill set to even try...I'm crossing my fingers for some help!)

Anyway, I took on the job in July 2004 since I had become a stay at home mom. I thought I would have "lots" of free time. Well that may have been true then, but now my daughter is almost 2 and let's just say that we don't nap like we used too. :)

As some of you may have read on other posts, I don't get very much help in the website area and it is a bit frustrating. I just recently found this site and so I hope to incorporate a lot of the "To Do" and get rid of the "don'ts" on our website. I look forward to learning a lot.

Thanks,
Kristen

Hi, Kristen,

Welcome again. What is a "skill set?" You will be glad that you found this forum. It has some terrifically talented and experienced people here. And they are willing to help as well. You can't beat that!! And they debate well too. :)

I am also the web site editor for the First United Methodist Church in
Wabash, IN. Another terrific forum is at:

http://gbgm-umc.org/churches/

Go to where it says "Sign up for UMConnect. This is a diverse group of people who have a wide range of experience from none, like me when I hopped aboard, to very advanced skills. One of the things I like about UMConnect is that somebody will hook up with you on a particular problem and work you through it. There are a couple of people who are excellent at that.

I have not ever asked anyone here to do that, but from the responses I have received on various issues, I imagine they would do so as well. One of the things I enjoy is reading all of the responses because they will bring up issues I had not considered. That is particularly true on UMConnect which has a free-wheeling style so to speak. I don't know what I mean. There is a difference between UMConnect and here, but I can't spell it out. The main thing is that both are excellent. I am glad I don't have to pick just one. It would be difficult.

Have fun!

Carol

Welcome again. What is a "skill set?"

That is from my HR days. It is a term that indicates the minimum skills (like typing, photo editing, html, etc. ..) collectively called a "set" that an individual must have in order to qualify for a certain job. Hope that sort of clears it up. :)

I will definitely look into that forum. Thanks for the link. I do use some of the links that UMC.org provides for websites, like the movie, music and book reviews. People seem to like that and all I had to do was put a link!!! Pretty easy and it looks nice.

Hi, Kristen,

I think HR means home room. What do the letters mean in your dictionary?

I use the reviews too. I like the way they are set up. However, since I am so new to this stuff, it took me about nine months to understand where to put all that weird "stuff." Now, I know. And it is so easy.

When I first started, I had a terrible time trying to figure out how to link things. I understood that it was a "to" and "from" situation, but you would have died laughing watch me day in, day out trying to figure it out. I had instructions too, but nothing made sense to me. Finally, all of a sudden the light came on. Now, of course, I can link things all over the place. WHAT FUN!!

My wife and I lived in San Antonio, Texas for 6 years (from 1986 to 1992). I've been to Austin many times! Great area. In fact, I got saved in November of 1987 in San Antonio!

My husband is from San Antonio.

I actually worked at Kelly AFB for awhile 1998-2000 and was supposed to transfer to Warner Robins AFB, GA, but met my husband instead. The rest of my office transitioned, but I stayed in Texas. We moved to Austin shortly there after.

I am originally from NJ, so I am still trying to get used to the "dry heat".

HR = Human Resources :)

You don't suppose there is an age difference between the two of us, do you? I never hear anyone use HR meaning Human Resources so I didn't know. I am 64 and haven't had HR come up in my life in those terms. But I sure have had human resources in other terms. I think we just said resources, I don't even remember. Oh well, thanks for the information. You better believe I will remember it and not have to ask again. lol

Kristin,
I just had some time to spend looking around the forum again and found your intro. I live in Lampasas and travel to Austin all the time. Shopping up here is not the greatest. I was born in NJ, lived all over the northeast and have married a man from Lampasas, so I really appreciate it when you said trying to get used to the heat here. I am trying to get used to heat, bugs, all the plants that have stickers, burrs or other things to jab you and all the other wonders of being in Texas.

Glad you found the forum, good place to bounce things off of when you have no other help. I am in the same boat here. Peggie
