I happened upon this forum while looking for a place to connect with other church tech kind of folks like myself and registered because I saw your post without any replies. I don't know if you are still looking or not, but I've been playing around with the idea of using Wordpress to create sites for a few churches that have nontech people that have to deal with them.

Wordpress is pretty easy to use in general and there are so many really good templates out there that you can probably do a decent job of maintaining a site even if you aren't a designer. I have a blog on my site that I wrote a few things about it and at the very least have some links to a few good church friendly site templates that you might consider.
